My mother always said that loving someone is easy if you can manage to keep your heart open for them. What she didn’t tell me was that love is also giving someone the power to destroy you, knowing they will, and forgiving them for it in advance. I couldn’t forgive like that. I wouldn’t.

"I've never understood how one person can love another so profoundly, like you love Alice, how he loves Bella, how... well, how you all love each other. My mother used to love like that, but me... I don't think I can. Whatever you see in me, it's not love. It's this lost, ugly thing I've given you to deal with. It's pitiful."

Charlotte Grace lives in ignorance, a human in a human's world just beginning to see how heartless a place it can really be. Her first impression of Alice Cullen is skewed and fleeting - a little girl wandering out into busy Seattle traffic, lost, confused. She makes a split-second decision that thrusts her headfirst into a chaotic, supernatural mess of guilt and fault, and comes quickly to see that there are some things not even the greatest of fortune tellers can foresee. The path she always thought she'd travel is broken and left undiscovered, and in its place, will the Cullens by her side, she finds herself wandering life's much more dangerous backroads.
