Coming from being raised a Navy brat myself and an understanding of the horrors of the attack on Pearl Harbor from a history standpoint in my love of history finding this story raised many flags to be one of my favorites of all time. My dad was a lifer so to speak 20+ year man granted he was no Admiral, but he was so much more in my eyes. He didn't serve during WWII, but in Korea and VietNam. Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the actual story of Bella and Edward throughout the timeline. The fact of them knowing each other since childhood, their fathers being best of friends, etc.... I can't remember crying so much throughout reading any story in fan fiction in such a long time. From the beginning with Charlie dying aboard the USS Arizona in sorrow till the ending with Edward's thoughtfulness of getting up to take care of Charlie while allowing Bella the extra sleep she so desperately needed. Each chapter held my attention from Bella not understanding why Edward's attitude towards her changed when other boys noticed her and wanted to take her out. His dancing with her to both make sure no one else could dance with her and in his way protect her from all the other boys (wolves in sheep's clothing that only Edward could see.) Bella's sorrow over losing her father, her strength and support at home, her rock of stability to be packed up and moved to the Cullens' household. Yes she had lived there often over the years, but now beyond her control. Still not understanding why her best friend's attitude towards her had changed upon reaching adolescent years. Having the attack on Pearl Harbor and the death of her father by the Japanese, Bella still questioning why? Why with no provocation or warning? One minute everything fine and then the next all hell broke out. Would be a hard thing to lose all at once. Your home, father, security, etc... Pulling the rug out from underneath someonne. Having no idea of what will happen to you especially since she wasn't even out of high school yet, a minor, etc.. Edward stepped up and admitted his feelings towards her and explained his odd behavior towards her. Funny until that moment, she never realized her feelings for Edward. Plans for Edward to enter the naval academy right after the holidays. Fast plans for Bella and Edward to get married before Edward would enlist. Long term romances especially when Bella was trying to overcome her grief of losing her father and her misery of losing the love of her life. Trying to maintain her own making plans for a wedding to Edward after his training. Quick wedding to Edward at the court house with family. Honeymoon was wonderful and beautiful. Can't say I don't like Jasper's mother at all. Didn't like the way she treated Alice at all. No excuse just because she was losing her baby boy. Jasper made his decision, his mom should have made a better effort of acceptance. She was nice to Bella. Of course, Alice does get her back when Jasper is home in the hospital when Alice puts her future mother-in-law in her place about Jasper not moving in with them so why sell their home because they were getting married and their house would accommodate all his extended handicapped needs. Take that Mamma, you're not needed and not wanted any more. Your boy wants his future wife, Alice. Alice spoke up and dominated that role. Wife trumps Mom. Cha Ching!!!! I can't tell you how many tears I shed for Bella and Edward though during all those long hours he worked and she was alone at home worrying. Edward wanting to be home and having to pick up and leave or early up and late returns, etc.... Bella never knowing when he would be home. Her birthday celebration I really cried. Just imagining Bella hurting so much not having any private time with Edward on her day, watching him from the kitchen window laughing with another woman in the yard. I can't blame her for being mad. I would have been too. Not that I had any doubts about Edward, I knew he wasn't cheating, but he could be so male stupid sometime and not realize how much he was hurting his wife. Whether it was joking about work or not, couldn't he see he was talking and spending more time with the people he saw every day at work than what he was spending with his wife at home. Didn't he notice he wasn't talking with her or even laughing with her. Almost wanted to smack him up side the head. Stupid male thinking. Men from Mars I know don't think. No comprehension of how the female mind works. Bella would have taken almost any kind of attention from Edward at that time. So bad. Then when Emmett brought Edward home just to say good bye and he couldn't tell her anything. Knowing Edward would be in no communication with Bella for who knew how long, talk about wanting to shove a sock into Em's mouth and chain him up in the corner just to give them a couple minutes of privacy. I mean come on Emmett. Put yourself in Edward's place, wouldn't you want to hold and kiss your wife goodbye knowing you might NEVER see her again. Just giving him warning remarks and Edward gotta go. I wanted to punch him in the mouth and tell him go sit in the damn car for a minute. Give them a minute, he's been gone from her and now he's leaving for who knows how long. The water works are starting again just thinking about it. Once he was gone and Rosalie wanted to come over and be with Bella, I'll be honest I don't blame her for resenting both Rosalie and Emmett. Why Edward? Why not Emmett he was in the service longer than her husband. Granted we know why, Edward's age, his foreign language proficiency, etc... But still I personally would have held a grudge against them both and blamed them for taking Edward away from me. The fact she forgave them was a big step in my book. Her behavior when he left was typical of Edward being dead. She was grieving the loss of him. Not knowing where, when, how, what, why he was being shipped away from her and when/if he would return whole, pieces, or not at all. Then when Edward returned home, how much more could the idiot hurt her than to treat her again like she doesn't exist. Stupid male logic --- NOT!!!!!! think Edward you smile at your baby sister, but no reaction or kind word to YOUR WIFE... I don't know how Bella hung in there so long before she laid down the law to him. The fear of him calling her out on it was terrifying, but living on eggshells for the rest of her life wasn't good either. Resentment and pain would eventually destroy her love into hate/anger. Edward's confession about dating and kissing another woman. I really thought he was going to confess to a lot more intimacy than what was given. I guess Edward was still a young boy in a lot of ways and his deep feelings towards his wife and his betrayal of her went even deeper. Not that what he did wasn't betraying her, but he was being directed to continue to get closer to Tanya's father. Just think he was beaten, burned, etc... just because Tanya couldn't light his fire so to speak. She didn't turn him on and thought he was cheating on her. If Tanya's mother hadn't mentioned that to Tanya's father, Edward's apartment would not have been ranshacked and his wedding band and Bella's grandfather's watch would never have discovered. The torture would never have occurred. that could have gone two different ways. 1) Tanya would have continued to push for a more physical relationship and more of a commitment. Since he wouldn't have been discovered as a spy -- He would have been forced to continue the charade of being interested in her and moving forward into a supposedly loving relationship. More kissing, hand holding, etc (whatever Tanya might have pushed for.) Probably would have physically (sexually) betrayed his wife with her. (adultery).
2) If he had listened to his orders and left both those items behind (wedding ring and Bella's grandfather's watch) when his apartment was checked from top to bottom nothing would have been found and he would never have been tortured. Would have had to continue the charade with Tanya. Probably would have betrayed Bella further as Tanya pushed for more with him.
The length of time away from Bella would have been greater as well. Maybe not since Edward was helped to escape torture when Tanya and her family forced to flee. But at least Edward wouldn't have been wounded and almost dead when he returned to Bella. Might have been less mentally damaged and the problems Bella/Edward had to go through might have been lesser. Like the nightmares, flashbacks, hiding of his outer scars, fears of his inner scars, and both of their fears of losing each other and their marriage. But of course, all of those things didn't happen. Edward was beaten, burned, broken, etc... He was a very broken man mentally, physically, and spiritually and with the help of his wife and her love for him came back from the brink. Changed his life enough he became a counselor for future vets coming home with mental angst problems to help them deal with nightmares, adjusting back into life, dealing with the horrors of what was left behind.
Truly a very enjoyable tale from start to finish. Definitely need more than a Kleenix box to read the entire story. Should start at least with two. Will need them as throughout the tale the readers heart will break as the characters go through with sorrow of death, guilt, torture, fear, betrayal, etc.... Definitely a story to recommend to read

She had to get that through to him. He kissed Tanya. He had feelings for her, maybe they were not what he has for Bella but he said I thought I would never see you again. That told me he was giving himself permission to sleep with her. I wonder how people who actually have to do this is espionage are able to do these things. Actors are messed up constantly with this. That is why they rarely can stay married.
I can understand her forgiving him for being forced. On the other hand carrying it on once he came home and hurting her, I didn't like that. He was also distant at times before he left. His association with his coworker.
He is mad at James because it puts in his face what HE did.
Cheating is a bad deal. period

You have done well with this story. Life then was different then it is now. War is hell. I expected when he treated her so coldly he had cheated. Now how he did it was another part. She stayed longer than I would have. I would have been out of that house and back to work as soon as he started treating me so coldly. If he didnt want me then fine. I would make another life for myself.
Bella took a little to long to say.. ENOUGH DAMN IT.

Okay we get the grief, but in that day and time people did NOT sit idely by. They were workers. You were expected to get up and get with it. No dishwasher and homes were cleaned daily. I grew up in that time. We did not even have a clothes washer until I was 8. So sitting around for days on end. DID not Happen even if you were sad. Maybe rich people but military people you pitched in and helped roll bandages or packed kits. Always something important to do.
Author's Response: I appreciate the education, but it's one day after the attack on Pearl Harbor and one day since a sheltered eighteen year old girl lost her entire family and had the rug pulled out from under her. One day. I think a little grief is warranted.
I'm sorry to have annoyed you so much, but if you would have kept reading, you would have seen that she does take some action. I'm happy with the way I wrote the story and Bella's grief specifically. I'm sorry it's made you aggravated enough to leave such a rude review.

OH, I'm pissed at Edward for leaving Bella unable to care for herself. I know she figured a way around it, but still. IRKED! Good for her for getting a job!

This keeps getting better. You are very talented. As I read this story, I feel like I am there. I have only been reading this story for a half a day and I can't seem to stop.
I would love to see the flashback.
Author's Response: Hey, thanks for reading. I'm so glad you're enjoying the story.
Most of the outtakes can be found here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5655855/1/Finding_Liberty
Be careful, though, and only read the first four chapters. Chapters five and six cover material you haven't read yet.
Thanks again and I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.

I love this story. I can only imagine what being married at that time was like. The stress of war and keeping a family together must have been difficult. As a successful woman, I can only imagine how difficult it was to be successful in the world. Thank you for writing this and look forward to the rest of the story. I definately would love to read EPOV of this chapter.
